The UM Wolves RFC Women’s team continued their fine run of form for 2025 with two comfortable wins in two games last Saturday.
The first match of the day saw the Wolves come up against Kavallieri.
Rasvita Sluckute thought that she had scored the first try of the match – which would have also been her first try of this season – after receiving a good offload and running through, but she went past the dead ball line meaning that play was brought back.
But she would make amends barely a minute later, as Wolves turned the ball over and after several successive passes, Rasvita was put into space to this time score the opening try, with no conversion coming.
Amber Dalli added a second try soon after, and Emma Borg put Raisa Farrugia into space down the left wing allowing her to score under the posts. One of those tries was converted, meaning that the score stood at 17-0 going into half time.
Some slick play saw Yana Scicluna being released down the wing, and she made the pass inwards to Annah Mallia who scored the fourth try of the match under the posts, allowing Rebekka Bartolo to convert.
It was Annah’s first ever try in a Wolves shirt, having start playing rugby last season!
Kavallieri pulled a try back through a strong 80 metre run, but it was not enough to alter the outcome of the match, with Wolves emerging victorious with a 24-5 scoreline.
The second match of the day was against third placed Falcons, a mix of experience and youth which has at times offered stern tests to the opposition.
However Wolves started the game off strongly, with Amber Dalli scoring almost immediately after kick-off and Raisa Farrugia displaying some excellent footwork to score as well. Rebekka Bartolo was pinpoint in her kicking, converting both tries and making the score 14-0.
Martina Zammit was shown a yellow card for a deliberate knock-on, allowing Falcons to relieve themselves of some pressure. Rasvita Sluckute was sharp to win the ball back off a short lineout though, and Annah Mallia pounced on the loose ball and ran in the try from the halfway line. Bartolo converted, making the score 21-0 at half time.
More tries followed: Raisa Farrugia went against the grain at a scrum and cut inwards before offloading to Amber Dalli for her to score, Raisa herself then added another as she exploited the space between two defenders, and Amber scored her fourth of the day after an assist from Diane Micallef.
Martina Zammit then had the final try of the afternoon, redeeming her yellow card earlier in the match, as she broke two tackles and scored under the posts.
Bartolo was perfect with her kicking: the seven tries during this match were all converted, making the final score 49-0 in Wolves’ favour.
Our women’s team are now in action against in March as their season approaches its climax.
