The UM Wolves Men’s Team’s unbeaten run continued last Saturday with a big win in the top of the table crunch match against Kavallieri, as they emerged with a 51-0 scoreline.

It was a key match for the men as the season begins to reach the business end and as all the possibilities at hand become ever clearer.

It was a typically strong start for Wolves, as they pinned Kavallieri into their own territory with a kick and chase which turned into a lineout deep in enemy territory.

The ball went from one side of the pitch to the other and back again, with Virain Hariramani putting Philippe Ioffe into space to score the first try of the match after just five minutes.  Connor Muir did not manage the conversion, leaving the score at 5-0.

Muir would soon get his range however, as he kicked over two penalties – one from 40 metres and another from within the Kavallieri 22m – to make the score 11-0.

It was something of a scrappy match which was very stop-start, as several penalties committed by both sides interrupted the flow of the match.

However, it would be Wolves who got on the scoresheet next midway through the half, as Cody Schmidt offered the ball up to Keegan Weintraud on the Kavallieri try line with a deft behind the back pass.  Weintraud battled through two tackles to ground the ball for his fifth try of the season, and Muir obliged with the conversion to make it 18-0.

Some good hands from the forwards resulted in the next try, with Agustin Rabini tipping the ball wide to Muir, who broke through the line and with numbers in his favour picked a pass inside to Schmidt, who went over between the posts for the try.  Muir again converted, and it was 25-0 going into half time.

The second half proved to be much of the same: a turnover and penalty allowed the Wolves to get downfield, and after couple phases from a lineout, Schmidt played to Gabriel Seychell who found the onrushing Virain Hariramani and put him in for the bonus point try. No conversion meant it was 30-0.

It was a more balanced affair from then on, with Kavallieri probing at times but being stopped from getting anywhere near the Wolves tryline by staunch defending and some exceptional turnovers – there were a total of 18 for the boys in green as they dominated the breakdown.

A clean line break from Mikel Dominguez Agirre was stopped metres away from the try line, and from a subsequent penalty the boys in green took the ball wide to current top scorer Axel Jeffers, who went over to score – putting his tally for the season into double figures.

Muir converted from out wide, and it was 37-0.

Two more tries would follow to close the game out.  Cody Schmidt weaved clean through the Kavallieri defence from a quick tap penalty, and Philippe Ioffe grabbed his second try of the day by exploiting space in a set play off a scrum.

Both tries were ably converted by Muir, taking his personal points tally for the day up to 16 points – enough to take him past the 100 point mark to his name this season so far.

With the full-time whistle blown, the score was 51-0 to UM Wolves, as the club continued to widen the gap at the top of the league table.

It’s the final time coming up against Overseas for our men up next this coming Saturday, as they seek to keep up their current momentum.
