A late Stompers try consigned the UM Wolves Women’s team to defeat in the opening day of the MRFU Women’s League on Saturday.
Fielding a 16-player squad, our ladies knew that they faced a tough task in the form of Stompers, and it was Stompers who took the lead in a well contested first half.
Wolves struck back with Rebekka Bartolo making a 60-metre solo run to score and then promptly convert her own try to make the score 7-5.
Captain Raisa Farrugia added another try to the scoresheet to make it 12-5, but Stompers struck back with the last play of an unusually long first half, with the try going unconverted – putting the score at half time at 12-10 in Wolves’ favour.
Stompers took the lead in the mid-way point of the second half but Raisa Farrugia struck back with a trademark run down the wing, and the try was converted to put the score at 19-17 in Wolves’ favour.
But it was not to be as Stompers scored with the final play of the match, turning the scoreline in their favour – a final score of 22-19.
Our ladies did register their first win of the season courtesy of a walkover against Kavallieri, which provided an automatic 28-0 win.
