The new season is also upon us for the UM Wolves RFC Women’s Team, who made club history in the 2023/24 season by winning the MRFU 7s Series and bringing home the club’s first ever piece of silverware.
Raisa Farrugia, the captain of the women’s team, spoke to the club about the team’s preparation over the summer, saying that while the season presents a new challenge, there is a lot of positivity and motivation in the squad to give their very best in every game.
This is your second season as captain, and the club comes into a new situation as it goes into the season as defending champions – how excited are you for the new season to start?
I’m extremely excited for the new season, especially since we’re coming in as defending champions. It’s a new challenge for us, and we know every team will be giving their best to beat us. But that’s exactly what motivates us to perform even better. I’m looking forward to leading the team again and building on what we achieved last year.
It’s been a good pre-season for the girls in preparation for the upcoming season – how would you sum it up?
Our pre-season has been intense and productive. We’ve focused on building our fitness levels, refining our tactics, and strengthening our team chemistry. Every single player has put in the effort, and it’s been great to see how committed everyone is to start the season strong. I think we’re well-prepared and in great shape to face whatever comes our way.
How would you describe the atmosphere in the club right now, less than a week before the season starts?
There’s a sense of excitement and determination in the air. We’re all feeling confident and positive, but also aware that we have to stay focused. Everyone’s pushing each other to bring out their best, and there’s a lot of support and team spirit within the squad. We can’t wait to get started.
What would you say that the team is aiming to achieve in the coming season?
Our main aim is of course to defend our title and continue playing at a high standard. But beyond that, we want to grow as a team and continue improving in every match. We know it won’t be easy, but we’re up for the challenge. Ultimately, we want to finish the season knowing we gave our absolute best in every game.
The women’s team are in action for the first time this season on Saturday 12 October in the first round of the MRFU Women’s Championship, as they face last season’s main rivals Stompers RFC at 11:40.
